The City of Litchfield Park will hold a special council meeting 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Celebration Hall, 400 S. Old Litchfield Road.

The meeting will focus on the proposal for a new library, which is planned to be constructed on Litchfield Road near the historic La Loma hilltop property. The new facility would be approximately 40% larger than the current library, offering expanded program space, enhanced technology and improved efficiency in book handling. The existing library, built in 1979, no longer meets the needs of the public and library staff.

The City of Litchfield Park has owned the facility since 1989 and the Maricopa County Library District manages library operations and staffing while Litchfield Park maintains the building and its utilities. The new library would be part of a larger cultural complex, including the P.W. Litchfield Heritage Center, a hilltop park, the proposed Agua Fria Arts Academy and the new library itself. However, the new location would be less accessible to pedestrians compared to the current site.

Construction for the new library is proposed to begin in the summer of 2025, with a grand opening planned for the fall of 2026. Litchfield Park is also considering preserving the current building for potential use by City Hall operations. Community members are encouraged to attend the special council meeting to learn more about the project, discuss the proposed use of the current building, and review the project schedule.
