A new Litchfield Park city ordinance is set to take effect Saturday, Sept. 21, that will restrict golf car use on Camelback and Litchfield roads, while continuing to limit access on Dysart Road.

This change is part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and integrate golf cars into the city’s transportation network. The ordinance prohibits golf cars from traveling on Camelback and Litchfield roads, citing safety concerns.

The council adopted the ordinance on a split 4-3 vote, with council members voting against it being concerned about government overreach without having accidents or existing traffic problems to refer to.

Golf cars will still be permitted on residential streets with speed limits under 35 mph and can use pathways and sidewalks to connect to these routes.

To cross streets with posted speed limits of 35 mph or greater, golf cars must use designated crosswalks or underpasses. The ordinance also mandates that golf cars adhere to all state statutes governing their use on public streets.

All operators must be licensed and yield to pedestrians and cyclists on pathways and sidewalks and adhere to speed limits of 25 mph on pathways.

Violations of the ordinance may result in fines up to $250, or a traffic citation in accordance with Arizona state law.

The city is planning to develop an extensive path system to further facilitate safe golf cart travel throughout Litchfield Park.
