    Fan Poll: Who should be the Standard-Times Athlete of the Week?

    The Texas high school sports season is finally here. The first few weeks of football games are over, volleyball is rounding out its tournament season in preparation for district play, and several standouts are nominated for the Standard-Times Athlete of the Week in 2024.

    The Standard-Times is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Standard-Times Athlete of the Week each Monday.

    Athletes who win Athlete of the Week can not win the award twice for the same sport. An Athlete can be nominated in a different sport, but can't win the award more than three times in a school year.

    Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close at 7 p.m. Wednesday and the winners will be announced Friday morning.

    This week's nominees

    Michael Daniels, Ozona football: He had eight receptions for 212 yards and three touchdowns. He had 15 tackles and a tackle for a loss on defense in a loss to Brady.

    Cooper Ellison, Miles football: He had five receptions for 198 yards and three touchdowns, and completed one pass for 31 yards and a touchdown in a win over Johnson City.

    Johnny Menefield, Brady football: He had 11 carries for 157 yards and three touchdowns rushing, adding 16 tackles and three tackles for a loss in a win over Ozona.

    Madisyn Renteria, Coahoma volleyball: She had 16 kills, six digs and four blocks in a four-set win over Sweetwater.

    Emilee Sikora, Central volleyball: She had 24 kills, two aces, one block and 21 digs in a win five-set win over Abilene Wylie.

    Luke Tharp, San Saba football: He completed 10-of-15 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown, adding 17 carries for 185 yards and two touchdowns rushing in a win over Goldthwaite.

    Jaidyn Vineyard, Coahoma football: He had 20 carries for 116 yards, three touchdowns rushing, three receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown in a win over Kermit.
