By this point in the season, the teams at the top of the list stand firm, continuing dominant performances to justify their ranking. The bottom of the list has been fluid throughout the season, and coming off big wins over Eldorado and Alpine, Sonora is back at No. 10 where the team began the season.

Some quick ground rules. The Standard-Times' power rankings are a subjective list. Obviously, the chances of a 2A team beating a 6A team are unlikely. And 1A plays an entirely different game.

This list represents the expectations of these teams, reflecting how they rank in district, region and state.

Here are the top teams in West Texas after Week 3 of the 2024 season:

More: Reagan County football's Nick Franklin highlights the Week 4 West Texas top performers list

    1. Richland Springs (4-0)

Last week: No. 1; W, 70-7 vs. Burkeville

This week: at Giddings Lone Star Southeast (1-1)

The Coyotes continue their dominant season. They got the job done on the ground last week putting up 70 points in one half of football without throwing a pass.

    2. Wall (3-1)

Last week: No. 2; W, 27-20 win vs. Monahans

    This week: at Sweetwater (2-2)

The Hawks take down another preseason-ranked opponent in a higher classification. Wall led 20-0 at the half but the Loboes outscored the Hawks 20-7 in the second half. It is the second week in a row where Wall dominated the first half and the opponent got back into the game late. Look for the Hawks to come out the gates quickly and keep their foot on the gas against Sweetwater.

    3. Mason (3-1)

Last week: No. 4; W, 35-12 vs. Junction

    This week: at Christoval (1-3)

Mason takes down rival Junction on the road. It was the third game in a row running back Sutten Silario rushed for over 100 yards. The defense also deserves its flowers for holding an explosive Eagles offense to 13 points.

    4. Miles (4-0)

Last week: No. 3; W, 21-14 vs. Eldorado

    This week: vs. Ozona (3-1)

A slow start against the Eagles and Mason's big performance dropped the Bulldogs a spot in this week's rankings. Twenty one points were the lowest total for Miles this season. Tevin Meade and the ground game kept them ahead of Eldorado's comeback attempts.

    5. Westbrook (2-1)

    Last week: No. 5; OPEN

This week: at Buena Vista (4-0)

The Wildcats must bring their A game as they travel to Imperial for a matchup against No. 9 Buena Vista. The Longhorns are coming off a big comeback win against Water Valley, and Westbrook is fresh off an open week. Since the Week 1 loss to Jayton, the Wildcats average 65 points per game.

    6. Junction (3-1)

Last week: No. 6; L, 35-12 vs. Mason

    This week: OPEN

The Eagles' first loss came to Class 2A DI No. 10 rival Mason. Now, Junction gets an opportunity to rest before starting its district schedule against Rocksprings.

    7. Coahoma (3-0)

    Last week: No. 7; OPEN

    This week: at Wink (3-1)

The Bulldogs' biggest test of the season comes against one of the top teams in the area, Class 2A DII No. 9 Wink. Since a Week 1 loss to Lubbock Christian, the Wildcats average 51.6 points per game while only giving up 13 points per contest on defense. Coahoma has an equally impressive scoring average and comes off an early open week.

    8. Brady (3-1)

Last week: No. 8; W, 20-0 vs. Ballinger

This week: vs. Ingram Moore (0-4)

Brady pitched its second shutout this season against Ballinger, with the first coming against San Antonio YMLA in Week 1. The Bulldogs' power running attack led by Ashton Taylor and Johnny Menefield combined for 173 yards on the ground against a strong Bearcat defense.

    9. Ozona (3-1)

Last week: No. 9; W, 32-27 vs. Harper

    This week: at Miles (4-0)

Ozona came out on top in a dogfight against previously undefeated Harper last Friday. The area's leading rusher, Christian Villarreal, put together another 200-yard and multi-touchdown rushing game this season. Another big test looms as they host Class 2A DII No. 8 Miles on Friday.

    10. Sonora (2-2)

    Last week: N/R; W, 25-8 vs. Alpine

    This week: at McCamey (2-2)

Since the Week 1 loss to Miles, the Broncos averaged 35 points per game. In contrast to last year's dominant rushing attack led by All-West Texas MVP Edgar DeLuna, Sonora is putting up big numbers in the passing game led by sophomore quarterback Aaron Segura. With three starts under his belt, Segura has 976 yards and nine touchdowns passing.
