The first district games kick off this week . Here is a look at the best matchups in the West Texas, Concho Valley and San Angelo area in Week 5 .
GAME OF THE WEEK
Miles (4-0) at Ozona (3-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Lion Stadium
Last week: Ozona 32, Harper 27; Miles 21, Eldorado 14
Neither of these teams have hit district schedules yet, but this game could provide insight into how prepared they are to compete for a district title.
Last year, this matchup was the highest-scoring 11-man football game in the area with Miles besting Ozona 70-68.
The Class 2A Division II No. 8-ranked Bulldogs reached their highest state ranking last week after a 21-14 win over Eldorado — one of the lone undefeated teams in the area. Ozona backed up its high praise with a tight 32-27 win over Harper after a tough 47-45 loss to Brady.
Both teams highlight players who are statistical leaders in the West Texas area. Ozona running back Christian Villarreal leads in rushing yards and touchdowns with 873 yards and 12 touchdowns. Miles has the area’s leading pass catcher, Copper Ellison, who comes into the matchup with 529 yards and seven touchdowns.
This game has high-scoring written all over it.
A win could also provide a big boost for either team.
For the Bulldogs, keeping an undefeated record despite a tough non-district schedule could be the fuel they need to propel them to a district championship — dethroning back-to-back state champions Albany.
On the Lions side, a win would be revenge for last year’s loss and build their resume as favorites in a wide-open District 3-2A DI race.
Week 5 games to watch for the West Texas area
Waco (2-2) at San Angelo Central (2-2)
7 p.m. Friday, San Angelo Stadium
Last week: Central 33, Belton 8; Navasota 34, Waco 12
The Bobcats have their first winning streak since 2022 with wins over Abilene Cooper and Belton led by dominant defensive performances. The Lions have been up-and-down through four games.
Wall (3-1) at Sweetwater (2-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Mustang Bowl Stadium
Last week: Wall 27, Monahans 20; Sweetwater 39, Lubbock Estacado 25
The Mustangs have an explosive offense led by running back Korda Moore and are off an impressive win over Lubbock Estacado. Wall has three wins against preseason top-25 teams.
Harper (3-1) at Eldorado (1-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Larry Mitchell Stadium
Last week: Miles 21, Eldorado 14; Ozona 32, Harper 27
Harper came into its Week 4 matchup against Ozona undefeated and nearly pulled off an upset. The Eagles pulled the best out of state-ranked Miles last week, can they keep the momentum up?
Water Valley (2-2) at Rochelle (2-2)
7:30 p.m. Friday, Hornet Pride Stadium
Last week: Buena Vista 54, Westbrook 52; Lometa 72, Rochelle 38
Water Valley led No. 8 Buena Vista but lost a tight game after the Longhorns came back in the fourth quarter. Rochelle is on a two-game skid.
Westbrook (2-1) at Buena Vista (4-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday, Longhorn Stadium
Last week: OPEN; Buena Vista 54, Westbrook 52
Westbrook had an early open week after two big wins against ranked teams. The Longhorns survived an early deficit to Water Valley for a tight win.
