Adoption fees at North Shore Animal League America normally range between $100 and $375, but are 50% off this week.

What better way to round out the dog days of summer than to come home with a new furry friend?

That’s exactly what the no-kill North Shore Animal League America organization is hoping New Yorkers will think about as it kicks off its “Clear the Shelters” week.

Starting Monday, Aug. 26 – which is National Dog Day – and running through Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2, adoption fees will be 50% off for all dogs and cats more than four months old.

Prospective pet parents can visit the organization’s Port Washington headquarters anytime from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this week to meet with an adoption counselor, who will help determine the best type of animal for each family’s lifestyle. Then, they can meet and greet potential companions in a specially-designed facility.

If it’s a match, adoption counselors will help with the process to complete the application. Pet parents must be over 21 and have a proper ID.

Adoption fees normally range between $100 and $375, depending on the type of dog or cat. The money goes to offset the cost of rescuing and caring for the animals before they’re adopted out, according to the organization – including vet care and spay/neuter services.

To make for a smooth transition after an adoption, new pet parents can come back to the North Shore Animal League for pet training, discounted vet care and supplies.

There should always be an adoption fee because animals have value. Also, if you can't pay the adoption fee, you can't afford a pet
