The News-Examiner recently sat down with new Grace High School volleyball coach Kayci Christensen. Here are her answers to our questions.

News-Examiner: How does volleyball contribute to growth and development in youth?

Christensen: The sport of volleyball contributes to the growth and development of youth in many ways, some being physically, mentally and socially. Playing volleyball allows athletes to push themselves physically while having the opportunity build mental fortitude alongside teammates.

NE: Do you feel summer league drastically helps athletes for in-season sports?

Christensen: Personally, I view summer league to be beneficial for athletes, as it provides more opportunities to be on court where skills can be developed. This summer we have been able to compete in the Rockland and Bear Lake tournaments against some competitive teams we won’t get to see in our regular high school season. As a coach, playing against tough competition allowed me to see the individual and team strengths as well as get an idea of what needs to be addressed and focused on at the start of our upcoming season.

NE: How would you encourage younger girls to grow in the sport?

Christensen: Find any opportunity to get on the court and compete. Each second spent playing the sport allows the player to not only develop better skills but become more confident with themselves and evolve with their teammates. I find it extremely important as a coach to create an environment in which athletes can compete and receive constructive feedback to grow. It’s also beneficial to celebrate your athletes’ strengths and help them foster a passion for the sport.

NE: What are some challenges you’re facing as a head coach?

Christensen: Truthfully, the athletes I get to work with are an amazing group of girls. I am also very fortunate to have a dedicated coaching staff where we have likeminded goals and the love for the game of volleyball. I’m sure as this is my first year being the head volleyball coach for Grace High School some challenges will arise, but we will adapt as needed. As of now, I am grateful to have been given this opportunity and am looking forward to the start of the season!

NE: How do the years ahead look for Grace High School volleyball?

Christensen: I am optimistic when thinking of the years ahead for the Lady Grizzlies. Despite losing six seniors, many promising athletes are returning as well as just entering the program. This year the Grace High volleyball team will be composed of girls that embody grit and determination, qualities I believe to be vital in growing and building Grace’s program. I’m beyond excited to work with these budding athletes and see their full potential unfold throughout this upcoming season.
