Dogs dive off docks at Grafton competition

GRAFTON W.Va. (WBOY) — This weekend in Grafton, Country Roads Canine Activities is bringing back its International Dog Sports Dock Diving Competition where dogs and trainers from across West Virginia and as much as six hours away will compete to see which dog can jump the furthest.

Thirty dogs will compete in this year’s event, which gives each dog and their owner three minutes on the dog to perform two jumps, with the longest distance jump being the one that measures each pair’s final score.

Country Road Canine Activities co-owner Lacey Fowler said that the longest distance they’ve ever seen a dog jump is 22 feet, nine inches.

“Just meeting all the people and seeing where they come from, and it’s not a breed-specific sport so you get to see all sorts of dogs here,” Maria Schubert, a dog owner from Philippi said.

Danny Lease, a dog competition judge, was in attendance on Friday to train other dog enthusiasts to become judges and said that he enjoys the camaraderie at events like the one Country Road Canine Activities host.

Along with competitions, Country Road Canine Activities also offers dog training for swimming, bird hunting, and tracking.
