A portion of Hwy. 16 between Graham and Loving will be closed for the filming of scenes in an upcoming television series called “Landman.”

Location managers with Paramount Pictures provided the updated filming schedule at a Young County Commissioners Court meeting Monday, April 8. The company’s production crews will shut down Hwy. 16 between Turtle Hole Road and Oliver Lane from Thursday, April 25 through Tuesday, May 7.

The scenes were originally planned to be filmed in March, with a few extra days in April, but those plans had to be discarded due to poor weather conditions in the days leading up to the filming. Instead of scattering the filming dates over several weeks, the company will look to get everything they need done in this span of nearly two weeks.

The scene the studio will film on the Young County road involves a collision between a small airplane and an oil tanker, which would cause an explosion.

“Originally, we were going to shoot in several different pieces, we were going to shoot the aircraft landing, we were going to shoot the incident, and then we were going to shoot the crime scene afterwards and we were going to break it all up,” said Dustin Daniels, Paramount Pictures location manager. “Now we’ve learned that it’s going to be more efficient for us to shoot all at one time. So as opposed to having to come and go and reset, start and stop, we’re going to try and do it all in one block.”

During the time of the road closure, truck and commercial travelers’ primary detour option will be Red Top Road, also known as FM 2652, between Graham and Hwy. 114. For local, non-commercial vehicles, detour signs will be placed on Hwy. 16 to direct traffic on side roads around the closure.

Daniels and his partners have been in contact with the Texas Department of Transportation, as well as with local entities to ensure the smoothest possible execution of the closure. More details will get worked out with those departments as the filming dates get closer, but the goal was to set the timeline for the updated dates.

Should the studio run into issues again with the weather, their permit will likely allow them to push the filming dates back to a period from May 2-17. But Daniels said that is a backup plan primarily due to what they learned with the weather issues last time.

“It’s definitely going to be a two-week inconvenience for everyone,” Young County Judge Win Graham said. “But hopefully when it’s all said and done it’ll be something that we’re all proud of and creates a little Young County buzz afterwards.”
