The Graham Regional Medical Center Auxiliary is preparing for one of its longstanding annual fundraisers, the Chalupa Luncheon.

The luncheon will take place Thursday, April 25 on the Young County courthouse lawn from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In addition to the lunch and dessert offered, the auxiliary will host a bake sale and a raffle for various prizes donated by local businesses.

The event serves as a fundraiser to provide equipment for the hospital to enhance the quality of care at GRMC for its patients. It has been a tradition in Graham for over 50 years and is one of the primary fundraisers the auxiliary puts on each year.

Tickets are $10 for a chalupa lunch and can be purchased at the luncheon, or from one of the GRMC auxiliary members before the event. The raffle tickets are $1 for one ticket or $5 for six tickets and can be purchased from auxiliary members beforehand or at the event as well.

Prizes include items such as a pump shotgun, a Kitchen Aid mixer, an Apple Watch and more.

To-go orders of eight lunches or more are also available by contacting Kristine Darrow at 940-456-0064 before the event. Anyone interested in to-go orders should include their name, how many orders they want and what time they want to pick them up.

As one of the major fundraisers during the year, the luncheon helps the auxiliary raise money typically for new hospital equipment.

“Last year, the auxiliary contributed $45,000 toward the purchase of a new (operating room) table),” GRMC Auxiliary president Pam Phillips said. “... Basically, it really is just a fun day for the community and for them to show support for the hospital.”

In addition to new equipment, the auxiliary fundraisers also help provide scholarships to students.

The GRMC auxiliary awards three scholarships each year with money raised from the chalupa luncheon, golf tournament, hospital gift shop and other smaller events.

“Until just a couple of years ago (the chalupa luncheon) was literally the only fundraiser for this organization, so it meant a lot,” Phillips said. “... Our money is used for basically those two things, for scholarships and to provide equipment and also just help for the hospital.”
