Polls closed late Saturday across the state and in Young County with two local school district bond elections on the ballot, as well as races for Graham Hospital District and the cities of Olney and Newcastle.

Election day was Saturday, May 4 and a total of 2,212 voters turned out in Young County, or 17.9% of total registered voters in the county. Early voting was held from Monday, April 22 until Tuesday, April 30. A total of 1,705 voters turned out for early voting, or 14.6% of registered Young County voters.

Both bond Proposition A and B for the Graham ISD election failed in the May election. Proposition A had 43.95%, or 708, who voted for the measure while 56.05%, or 903, voted against the measure. Proposition B had 34.06%, 549 who voted for the measure while 65.94%, 1,063 voted against the measure.

This will be the second time the district has held a special bond election that has failed after the May 2023 bond election which called for $49.4 million. That election had 32.71%, or 335, who voted for the measure, and 67.29%, or 689, who voted against the measure, according to official election results.

The current bond election was held with two bond propositions, the first of which was seeking to consolidate the district from three to two elementary schools.

This would have been accomplished by adding space at Pioneer Elementary School to serve pre-K through second grade students along with minor renovations at Crestview Elementary School to serve third through fifth grade students. The proposition also included the demolition of the existing Woodland Elementary School campus.

The estimated cost for Proposition A is $27,500,000 and the anticipated date of completion is August 2026. Proposition B on the ballot was for a student multipurpose facility at an estimated cost of $10,500,000 and an anticipated completion date of August 2025.

Also on the ballot was the race for the Graham Regional Medical Center Board of Directors which had four seats up for election held by Dr. Donald Behr, Terry Bishop, Jon Garvey and Barry Strickland. The incumbent candidates reclaimed their seats over new candidate Mark Freis.

Another large ticket item on the ballot was a $8.35 million bond election. OISD determined storm shelters was a top priority when establishing a plan for the bond.

Among other items, the bond package includes dual-purpose tornado shelters for all students while having everyday use of the shelter space.
