If Graham’s fall season offensively looks anything like what the Steers are doing in 7on7 the program is in for a lot of success.

Graham’s 7on7 team traveled to Brownwood last Saturday, June 1, to participate in another state qualifying tournament (SQT) and kept their summer record perfect after going 3-0 in pool play. The Steers qualified for the state tournament in College Station at the end of June in their first event of the summer season but have continued to participate in SQTs to practice and keep themselves sharp.

Due to the fact the Steers have already qualified for state, they only participated in the pool play games at the Brownwood SQT but, once again, they would have been in the championship game with a 3-0 record. Graham defeated the Brownwood White team, Clyde and Benbrook to keep their SQT record perfect at 10-0 on the season.

Graham will participate in one more SQT this Saturday, June 8 at Jim Ned High School and the 2024 State 7on7 Tournament will be in College Station Thursday, June 27 and Friday, June 28.

    Steers v. Brownwood White, (W) 47-12

Graham’s day got off to a hot start on both sides of the ball with a dominant win over one of Brownwood’s two teams in this SQT. The Lions got on the board first but after that, Graham’s defense locked down.

The Steers started out the day with quarterback Ty Thompson connecting with receiver Brayden Riggins for the first score and the conversion made it 7-6. Graham’s defense followed with four consecutive three-and-outs while the offense continued to score. Running back Rylan Monsey, receiver Harison Brockway and Riggins all caught touchdown passes and the Steers led at halftime 27-6.

Brownwood managed one more score in the second half, but Graham’s offense continued to roll. Thompson spread the ball around as Monsey, Mason Gibbs and Landon Bass all had touchdowns as the Steers went on to win 47-12.

    Steers v. Clyde, (W) 55-0

Game two saw domination from start to finish by the Steers. The defense stayed locked in and continued to force three-and-outs from the opposing offense while Graham’s offense scored with ease.

Safety Bruin Wright had a pick six for a score while Riggins, Hayden Horn, Jace Gill and Jack McEntire all had receiving touchdowns for Graham to lead 35-0 at the half.

After two more scores coming out of halftime by Horn and McEntire, the Steers had built up a 48-0 lead. With the game in control, Graham’s defensive players took a turn on offense while backup quarterback Gill took over for Thompson. Jayton Hearne and Bass both made catches on a drive before McEntire caught the final touchdown of the game as the Steers won 55-0.

    Steers v. Benbrook, (W) 39-34

After two easy wins to start the day, Graham faced a more formidable challenge in the final game of pool play against the Bobcats. Coming into this SQT, Benbrook had already played in three championship qualifying games and their offense showed it.

But it was Graham who got on the board first as Thompson connected with Horn on the second play of the day for a 6-0 lead. Benbrook answered and took the lead after converting a third-and-long for a touchdown and led 7-6.

Monsey and Brockway caught touchdown passes and the defense only allowed one more Benbrook score as Graham took a 19-14 lead before halftime. On defense, Wright intercepted a Benbrook pass on the final play of the half as the Steers held the lead.

Throughout the second half the two teams went back and forth scoring. Graham started the last drive of the day from the 45-yard line and were down 34-33 with less than two minutes to play. Thompson hit Monsey for a 20-yard gain and then McEntire for a 15-yard gain to set Graham up at the 10-yard line with just seconds to play.

The first play ended up as an incomplete pass and with time ticking down, Thompson hit Gill for the game-winning touchdown and a 39-34 Graham win as time expired. It kept the Steers’ record perfect at 10-0 and as they move towards their final SQT they’ll look to maintain that perfect run as they prepare for state.
