Rainier Scholars Receives $180K Donation
KeyBank recently gifted the Rainier Scholars a $180,000 grant. The Rainier Scholars, a nonprofit serving Tacoma and Seattle, seeks to offer a pathway for students living in underrepresented communities to college graduation, a release said. The nonprofit's program starts in fifth grade for students and continues on for 12 years with personal academic-enrichment programs, leadership training, career development, and more.
Seahawks Strike Under-the-Radar Trade With Browns
The Seattle Seahawks traded veteran center Nick Harris to the Cleveland Browns for essentially a 2026 pick swap. Harris was moved to Cleveland in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick, and Seattle sent the Browns a 2026 seventh-round pick. The deal was made official on August 11, 2024, one day after the Seahawks’ 16-3 preseason win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Vehicle crashes into Kent restaurant; two people injured | Update
Two people in a Kent restaurant were injured after a vehicle crashed into the business when a driver confused the brake and gas pedal. Firefighters responded at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13 to the Imperial Garden restaurant in the Great Wall Shopping Mall, 18230 E. Valley Highway, according an Aug. 14 email from Puget Sound Fire spokesperson Pat Pawlak.
A Workshop for Prospective Restaurateurs
The city of Tacoma’s Community and Economic Development Department will be hosting the free Restaurant 101 Workshop from 4-6 p.m. on Aug. 28. The event will feature local restaurant owners who will share their expertise on what it takes to start and grow a restaurant business. Panelists include Sidepiece Kitchen owner Hailey Hernandez; Wooden City owner Abe Fox; and Lil Woody's and Darkalino's owner Marcus Lalario.
