WEST MONROE, La. (KTVE/KARD) – The Southwestern Athletic Conference hosted its annual Football Media Day on Tuesday, July 16 in Birmingham, Alabama. The event provided a platform for coaches, players, and officials to discuss the upcoming season, share insights on team strategies, and engage with media representatives from across the conference.
In his inaugural year as head coach of Grambling State University, Mickey Joseph spoke about the honor of guiding GSU, emphasizing the competitive SWAC conference and stressing the importance of maintaining Grambling’s values with integrity.
“Oh! I’m happy to be back,” said Joseph. “You know, I think I came in the SWAC, the first job, was 1999 with Alabama State, and then with Jay Hopson at Alcorn, and {then}, you know, Grambling. So I’m happy to be back in the SWAC, it’s a very competitive conference. You know, you like the gameday atmosphere, and really the coaches in this league. You know, you really have a lot of respect for {them}. Especially the young ones, the young ones are some good ones. You know, you just wish everybody well, and you know, let’s compete amongst ourselves and pull for each other.”
Joseph also discussed the various coaching positions that have prepared him for his role at Grambling.
“You know, we’re just ready to get the season kicked off,” said Joseph. “You know, in the coaching profession, everybody takes something from somebody. You never have your own plan. You look at the big-time college coaches and they had to get it from somewhere. You know, and by me being under a lot of head coaches, you pick something from all them. You get something from all. You know, you just pick things up from them and you try to put it together to make it fit to where you’re at, and that’s what we did at Grambling.
