    Grand Coteau police chief pleads guilty to malfeasance, obstruction charges

    OPELOUSAS, La. ( KLFY ) — The Police Chief of Grand Coteau pleaded guilty this morning to felony charges of malfeasance in office and obstruction of justice, court records show.

    Jeffrey Carl Guilbeau pleaded guilty to two counts of malfeasance in office and one count of obstruction of justice today in the 27th Judicial District Court.

    Guilbeau was sentenced to two years in prison at hard labor, which was suspended, one year of probation and remedial counseling.

    He was arrested in July 2023 on the following charges: two counts of distribution of Schedule I narcotics, one count of theft and three counts each of obstruction of justice and malfeasance in office. The charges not pleaded to were dropped.

    Guilbeau submitted a letter of resignation to Mayor Patrick Richard in June 2023, but later retracted the resignation and resumed duty on June 28.
