When 16-year-old Audrey Detar suggested traveling to and swimming in each of the five Great Lakes in 24 hours to her two best friends – Gracie Sternberg, 17, and Daisy Dyk, 18 – she didn’t anticipate that they would be taking off for their road trip only a few days later.

The girls work together at Christian Reformed Conference Grounds in Grand Haven Township, and they had joked about planning a 24-hour weekend road trip to the lakes after Detar told them about a TikTok video she got the idea from on Aug. 6. During their shift together two days later was when the idea started to become a reality.
