    Cohasset council holds moment of silence in honor of former Mayor’s recent passing

    Cohasset City Council held a moment of silence at Tuesday’s regular city council meeting following the Pledge of Allegiance for former Mayor Jeff Walker whom recently passed.

    “Thank you everybody. Thank you for your service, Jeff.” Cohasst Mayor Andy MacDonell said.

    In other business:

    Dean Danielson, a resident since 1973, spoke to Cohasset Council about speed limit signs and speed bumps on Lake Street.

    “Nobody stops at the stop sign,” Danielson said, requesting that speed limit signs and speed bumps be added. “We have three new families that live on that street. With very young kids.”

    “The other issue I have is with the snowmobile trail,” Danielson said, adding in where he felt the snowmobile trail should go.

    “Most of the speeding is done by our own people,” Danielson said.

    “We know speeding has been an ongoing issue around town,” Mayor MacDonell said.

    “I would hate to see one of those little kids get hit,” Danielson said.

    “Nobody wants to see that,” Mayor MacDonell said.

    Councilor Kevin Ott stated they got extra speed enforcement from May through September.

    “There will be extra law enforcement presence in the area,” the Mayor stated.

    Another resident spoke in regard to the machine that the City was planning to rent to be used clear brush. He mentioned another attachment that could potentially work, that could be purchased for similar price.

    “So you are saying, that is just the attachment,” Councilor Terry Bartz asked.

    “Just a thought,” the resident said. “It was just a suggestion.”

    Items 6G and 6I are tabled until next meeting: New Shop Storage Building and Industrial Park Grubbing. There was a 6:30 p.m.

    Council moved Fire Chief, Dave Meyers up on the agenda.

    “We have four trainees on the department right now. Some have finished, and some have not,” Meyers said, but added he wanted to add Dennis Benalkin to be added as a full-time fighter as he has been doing an outstanding job.

    Council made a motion to approve this.

    “We have six applications in the folder right now. We are going to get the hiring committee started again,” Meyers said.

    Currently, Cohasset has 17 full-time fighters, in addition to the trainees.

    Council talked about the Itasca County Radio Board.

    “This has been the ongoing issue, with the amortization over time,” Mayor MacDonell said. “Seems like there is an issue, and with staff turnover. These radios do take abuse and do need to get replaced.”

    Mayor MacDonell asked the Chief if additional storage would be needed, in regards to the new shop storage building. Meyers mentioned it would be greatly appreciated.

    Meyers said there has been 90 calls in the first quarter, a couple mutual aid runs and mostly medicals.

    Approved 120 vacation hours for Security Officer Dean Scherf.

    Approved the supplemental letter agreement for SRTS right of way and cemetery parcels.

    “This is to add funds to City Engineer Short, Elliot and Hendrickson (SEH) to continue working on a couple projects,” Mayor MacDonell said.

    Approved the 2024 Industrial Park mass grading, the second and third requests, for Casper Construction. In February 2024, $417,000 was approved for this by council. The first payment was $131,000 and change, the second is $161,718.15 and third $43,676 and change. The total amount for the second and third payment is $336,444 , with the remaining balance being $80,500.

    Approved the two city clerks to go to the Minnesota Municipal Clerks Institute Training.

    “It’s really important to invest in our employees education,” Ott said.

    Council approved the purchase of the gas piping fuse equipment.

    Approved claims in the amount of $92,218.03 and claims in the amount of $181,112.55.

    The Annual Board of Appeals and Equalization meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 9 a.m. at the Cohasset City Hall.

    Acknowledged the February 6, 2024 Economic Development Authority minutes, the February 7, 2024 Planning Commission minutes, the March 4, 2024 CPUB minutes and the March 19, 2024 city council minutes.

    Councilor Andy Haarklau was absent with notice.
