The Minnesota State Fair, affectionately known as “The Great Minnesota Get-Together,” stands as a cherished annual tradition, captivating visitors with its diverse offerings and rich history. In 2024, this grand event will take place from August 22 to September 2, promising twelve days of unparalleled excitement and community celebration.

Dating back to 1859, the Minnesota State Fair was first held a year after Minnesota achieved statehood. Initially, the fair moved between various locations until finding its permanent home at the current fairgrounds in Falcon Heights, near St. Paul, in 1885. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the largest and most attended state fairs in the United States, drawing millions of visitors each year,

An all time attendance record was allegedly set in 2019 with fair attendance reaching 2,126,551over the course of the event. The fair’s elongated success is a testament to Minnesota’s pride in our state and agricultural heritage, showcasing livestock, crops, and other agricultural products alongside educational exhibits and competitions.

In 2024, fairgoers can expect a blend of traditional attractions and exciting new additions to the lengthy list of events. The Grandstand will once again be a hub of entertainment, featuring a lineup of concerts and performances from nationally and internationally renowned artists. Past performers have included legendary names in music, and this year promises to continue that tradition. Additionally, the Midway and Kidway will offer a range of thrilling rides and games, catering to adrenaline seekers and families alike. Competitions in baking, crafts, and horticulture will highlight the diverse talents and creativity of Minnesotans, with blue ribbons awarded to the best in show.

As most Minnesotans know, one of the standout features of the fair is its extensive vendor list, which includes a mix of returning favorites and newcomers. Over 300 food vendors will serve a variety of culinary delights, making the fair a food lover’s paradise. Classic fair foods such as corn dogs, cheese curds, and mini donuts will be readily available, providing nostalgic flavors for many attendees. However, the fair is also known for its innovative food offerings, with vendors pushing the boundaries of traditional fair cuisine. Unique to 2024, several new vendors will be making their debut, offering items like deep-fried avocado bites, Korean BBQ tacos, and gourmet ice cream sandwiches. Some other standouts on the list of new food vendors are offering at this year’s get together include deep fried ranch, walking shepherds pie, strawberry lemonade donuts, and SO much more.

Local breweries and cideries will be present, offering craft beers and ciders that pair perfectly with the endlessly diverse food options. According to MPRnews, along with 46 returning specialty drinks and brews for the Great Minnesota Get-Together, 63 new drinks were announced Monday morning, ranging from hard seltzers, slushies, mixed drinks and beers. Some new beverages set to debut at the fair include, Third Street Brewhouse’ Blueberry Pancake Lager, Frozen Mango Tango by Lift Bridge brewing, and a long list of other deliciously descriptive ales. Hope you plan to come thirsty!

Among the new vendors this year, “Taco Fusion” will introduce a fusion of Mexican and Asian flavors, featuring dishes like sushi burritos and kimchi tacos. “Sweet Treats” will offer a range of decadent desserts, including vegan and gluten-free options, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a sweet indulgence. Additionally, “Farm Fresh Smoothies” will provide refreshing and healthy beverage options, highlighting local and organic produce. There is truly something for everyone, as long as you are hungry!

The fair’s unique attractions add to its charm and appeal. The Giant Slide, a beloved fixture since 1968, will once again offer a thrilling descent down its multi-lane track. The Miracle of Birth Center will provide an educational experience, allowing visitors to witness live animal births and learn about animal husbandry. The Creative Activities Building will showcase the artistic talents of Minnesotans, with exhibits ranging from quilts and needlework to fine arts and photography.

Live entertainment is a cornerstone of the fair, with numerous stages hosting performances throughout the event. From local bands and dance troupes to nationally recognized artists, there is something for every musical taste. Daily parades, complete with floats, marching bands, and costumed characters, add to the festive atmosphere and provide a visual and auditory feast for attendees.

The fairgrounds are also home to several specialized exhibits and pavilions. The Eco Experience, for instance, educates visitors on environmental issues and sustainable living practices. This exhibit features interactive displays and demonstrations on topics such as renewable energy, recycling, and conservation. The Minnesota Wine Country exhibit offers a taste of the state’s burgeoning wine industry, with samples and information on local vineyards and wineries.

Sustainability and innovation are at the forefront of the Minnesota State Fair’s mission. The fair has implemented extensive waste reduction and recycling efforts, striving to minimize its environmental footprint.
