Itasca Waters “Practical Water Wisdom” for October

Would you like to leave a legacy of clean water for future generations? If so, then Itasca Waters has the series for you. The “Practical Water Wisdom: A Virtual Learning Series” runs for an hour beginning at noon on the first Thursday of each month (except July when it is on the second Thursday). It is FREE, online, open to all, and includes an interactive Q&A session.

Our October 3 program will be “PFAS in Water: How Did They Get There and Why Are They So Challenging to Address?” presented by Iron Range native Dr. Bridget Ulrich, a Principal Research Scientist who leads a research team focused on Environmental Chemistry at University of MN Duluth.

Join us to learn about PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals.” Once they enter the environment they don’t fully degrade, and they spread quickly through water and air. This allows PFAS to contaminate pristine waters in remote regions, including the middle of Lake Superior. And to add to the challenge, PFAS are more than just PFOS and PFOA—there are thousands of PFAS, including “precursors” that can transform into PFOS or PFOA once they enter the environment.

Dr. Ulrich’s presentation will highlight recent work evaluating PFAS in Lake Superior, challenges and emerging solutions for PFAS monitoring and treatment, and a perspective on what we can do to help address the problem.

Attend this online presentation and ask your own questions!

We hope through our Water Wisdom series you will be inspired each month to think about water in a new way. Please join us online October 3 by registering at https://itascawaters.org/water-wisdom-2024 or simply scan the QR code in this article. You will receive a Zoom invite by email, with periodic reminders, to join the program. For more information contact info@itascawaters.org.

The Practical Water Wisdom series is the brainchild of Itasca Waters, a nonprofit organization located in Itasca County whose mission is to ‘team up’ with other organizations and concerned citizens to maintain abundant, clean water for our continued health, enjoyment, and a strong economy. This series is supported by Itasca Waters’ members, Minnesota Sea Grant, Itasca Coalition of Lake Associations, Itasca County Soil and Water Conservation District, KAXE/KBXE, Rapids Radio, and the Grand Rapids Herald-Review.
