Three charged in Monday's Calumet shooting

GRAND RAPIDS—Three people were charged with multiple crimes—including, in one case, second-degree attempted murder—in Ninth District Court in Grand Rapids in connection with a shooting incident in Calumet early Monday.

Daniel Brusacoram, 31, of Talmoon, has been charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, and felon in possession of a handgun.

Isabelle Lorraine Smith, 23, of Talmoon, has been charged with first and third degree assault.

And Jessica Jean Schinzing, 46, of Grand Rapids, has been charged with first and third degree assault and misdemeanor driving while impaired.

In a statement of probable cause filed Wednesday morning, law enforcement allege Brusacoram shot Schinzing’s husband (male victim) three times and that Smith assaulted the male victim’s sister (female victim), after the three suspects entered the female victim’s home and an argument ensued.

Court records suggest the incident was the continuation of an argument between the male victim and his wife, Schinzing, that had been going on “throughout the day.”

According to court records, at approximately 2:33 a.m. Monday, the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible shooting at 1020 Gary Street in Calumet.

It was reported that two people (a brother and sister who weren’t named in court documents) had been shot. When law enforcement arrived at the scene they observed that the female victim had lacerations on her head, “a possible gunshot wound,” and was bleeding profusely. She had to be life flighted to Duluth.

It was later learned the male victim, who according to court records had been dropped off at the Grand Rapids Hospital via a private vehicle, appeared to have three gunshot wounds—two to the chest and one to the right thigh.

Two juvenile witnesses were identified at the scene, and according to the statement of probable cause, one of them told law enforcement officials that they witnessed a female later identified as Schinzing, who is “either dating or married to” (the male victim) come to the house along with Brusacoram.

The other juvenile witness said that they were sleeping when they heard a loud noise from the basement and then saw three people come upstairs, Schinzing, Brusacoram, and a woman later identified as Smith.

The male gunshot victim was later interviewed at the hospital, according to court records, and told law enforcement that he had been at his sister’s house because he was arguing with his wife, Jessica Schinzing, throughout the day and that he was “either calling or texting Schinzing about family matters which may have upset her.”

The male victim alleges that early Monday morning Schinzing, Brusacoram and Smith came to the house and went in the basement and an argument ensued. He told law enforcement that he had a knife on him but never brandished it and that at some point “Brusacoram brandished a firearm,” described as a Hellcat 9mm, which he alleges belonged to Schinzing.

According to the complaint, Brusacoram allegedly then shot the male victim at least three times. The male victim said that “he saw Smith physically assault and punch” his sister in the face but was uncertain whether she had received gunshot wounds or if her wounds were just from the assault, according to the statement of probable cause. He also stated that he thought “Schinzing was trying to set him up, and that when the three parties came into the house they were quiet.”

The female victim sustained a broken nose and needed staples in her head due to the injuries sustained from the assault.

According to court records, Schinzing was arrested at a residence in Grand Rapids later that morning and that she allegedly “had admitted to using methamphetamine,” in the previous 72 hours.

At approximately 7:35 a.m., Itasca County Dispatch received a phone call regarding two parties wearing dark clothing and walking on Highway 169 fitting the description of Brusacoram and Smith. Law enforcement proceeded to the scene and the suspects fled on foot but were eventually apprehended and “Brusacoram had a firearm in his possession what was later described as a 9mm handgun.”

Court records show Brusacoram has convictions for the following offense: Felony tamper with witness in the first degree and felony kidnapping in 2016; felony first-degree burglary in 2014; DWI in 2013; misdemeanor disorderly conduct in 2012; and two counts of felony threats of violence in 2011.

Records also show he has violated probation two times and has a pending charge for felon in possession of a firearm. He also has a Rule 20 pending and has failed to appear for court three times regarding that file.
