GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Health officials are reminding people to be cautious with fireworks this Fourth of July.

Amber Davenport, regional clinical director for WellNow Urgent Care , told News 8 the holiday often comes with an increase in burn injuries.

“There are some tips that can help to prevent those: Making sure that we’re being cautious with lighting fireworks, standing a distance from the firework itself, making sure that children aren’t playing with fireworks attended,” she said.

What to remember if you’re using fireworks this Fourth of July

She reminded people using fireworks to have a first aid kit on hand. She said to place cool, moist compresses on burns and go to a clinic for treatment.

Davenport also reminded people to keep an eye out for heat exhaustion . You should limit time in the hot sun, especially during mid-day, and make sure you’re well hydrated to avoid problems.

“Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol in combination with the heat, because that can really dehydrate you,” she advised.
