LANSING — Backyard barbecues, fireworks and even some beach time should be in play for Independence Day, forecasters said.

It should be nice on Thursday, the 4th of July, with highs in the mid-80s and overnight lows in the mid-60s, the National Weather Service said.

"We do start to cloud up, with a mix of sun and clouds on the 4th, but we might have some clearing for fireworks," Joe Ceru, a forecaster for the weather service in Grand Rapids, said Tuesday afternoon.

    The weekend forecast was improving.

There's still a good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Friday, but forecasters were expecting mostly clear conditions on Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the mid-70s on Saturday and in the low to mid-80s on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the weather service had said there was a potential for showers and thunderstorms both days.

Things were looking up for anyone pondering a trip to the beach, too. There should be a low swim risk through Independence Day, Ceru said.

"Everyone should be mindful and stay dry when the waves are high," Ceru said.
