Court docs: Man shot neighbor over truck damage, egging

TEXAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A “long-standing” feud between neighbors escalated to vandalism and then a shooting in Texas Township, investigators say.

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. July 8 near the intersection of Gooseberry Avenue and Tiger Lily Drive. Deputies said a 28-year-old man shot a 19-year-old man, leaving the 19-year-old hurt. Tylor Houghtaling was later charged with assault with intent to murder , two counts of felony firearm and discharging a firearm in or at a building causing injury.

According to court documents, the 19-year-old and the Houghtaling family were involved in a prolonged neighbor dispute that centered on property lines.

Surveillance video captured the 19-year-old man throwing eggs at the Houghtaling home, court documents show. Then, according to the documents, the 19-year-old picked up a wooden 4×4 post from his own driveway, went to the Houghtaling home and started swinging the post at a truck owned by the Houghtaling family.

That’s when there were three gunshots, court documents show, and the 19-year-old ran off yelling that he had been shot. He was shot twice, in the torso and the calf, the documents say. According to deputies, his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Houghtaling admitted to his parents that he had shot the 19-year-old from a second-story bedroom, court documents say. Houghtaling also told deputies that he was the shooter and showed them the room where he left the gun, according to the documents.

Court records show the 19-year-old has also been charged with malicious destruction of private property in the July 8 incident.
