Former president and current Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump defended the media at a rally in Grand Rapids after his crowd began booing them when he mentioned the press area from the stage.

Trump was speaking at a campaign rally in Michigan with running mate JD Vance on Saturday, almost exactly a week after the July 13 assassination attempt at his Butler, Pennsylvania rally, which claimed the life of one rallygoer and injured two others.

In his opening comments, Trump brought up the assassination attempt, which he also discussed in detail during his Republican National Convention speech earlier this week.

Trump expressed his gratitude for the “outpouring” of well-wishes, and specifically thanked Butler Memorial Hospital and the “great citizens of Butler, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area” for their efforts on his behalf and the “love that they showed us all.”

“Nobody’s seen anything like it, and hopefully they never will again,” he said.

Trump then brought up the press who covered the terrible moment.

“They had cameras blazing,” he said. “I guess it was different in that way too, because we were right in the middle — all those. See, look at all the news back there. And they were all blazing, they were, they were going.”

As he pointed out the press and their cameras at the rally, the crowd began to boo them, and Trump intervened.

“No, no. No they covered it fairly,” said Trump. “They couldn’t believe what they were seeing either, so they did.”

“You did cover it fairly,” he said to the press.

I want to thank Butler Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania for the incredible job they did and service they gave, and all of the great citizens of Butler, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area and everyone else for the job they did and the love that they showed us all. It was incredible, actually. What a time that was. What a time that was. Nobody’s seen anything like it, and hopefully they never will again. And they had cameras blazing. I guess it was different in that way too, because we were right in the middle — all those. See, look at all the news back there. And they were all blazing, they were, they were going. No, no. No they covered it fairly. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing either, so they did. You did cover it fairly.
