Former President Donald Trump slammed Democrats he said portray him as a threat to free and fair elections and that he “took a bullet for democracy” while referencing the assassination attempt against him last week.

Trump addressed a crowd in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Saturday afternoon for his first rally since he was shot through the ear by a gunman’s bullet in Pennsylvania last week. In Michigan, Trump was wearing a much smaller ear bandage than the one he showed off in Milwaukee at the GOP convention.

Trump referenced the shooting at several points, even defending the media’s coverage of the horrific events at one point.

He also referenced the controversial “Project 2025” from Heritage Foundation, and said that Democrats keep calling him an extremist.

“The other side is going around trying to make me sound extreme,” Trump told Michigan voters. “Like I’m an extremist. I’m not. I am a person with great common sense. I’m not an extremist at all.”

Trump said Project 2025 was written by the “radical right,” which he said was the polar opposite of the “radical left.”

After offering additional disclaimers and disavowing statements about it, Trump returned to the idea, which has been the dominant theme from his opponents since his first campaign, that he’s an extremist who opposes democracy.

“They keep saying, ‘He’s a threat to democracy.’ I’m saying, what the hell did I do for democracy? Last week I took a bullet for democracy.”
