Donald Trump has bizarrely stated he'd rather face electrocution than a shark attack during a rally speech.

The former US president, who is 78, was addressing supporters in Grand Rapids, Michigan, marking his return to the stage after a close call with an assassination attempt last week in Pennsylvania .

Trump's wide-ranging talk hit on topics from the economy to immigration and even electric vehicles, before he touched on his own mortality .

Amidst his speech, he veered into a strange aside about electric boats, questioning: "If I'm in a boat and it's all-electric and it starts to sink... I asked the guy 'do you get electrocuted sitting over this? '".

He continued with what he described as an analogy, pondering: "And then I say - and I don't think there's anything wrong with this because it's an analogy - if there's a shark about 10 yards away, 'do I get electrocuted or do I go with the shark?' I would take electrocution all day long."

In addition, Trump touched on the controversial Project 2025, a set of policies favoured by some conservatives for his potential second term. This agenda aims to fire thousands of civil servants, abolish the Department of Education, and ban abortion pills.

Attempting to distance himself from the extreme proposals, Trump clarified to his audience: "Some on the right, the severe right, came up with this Project 2025. You have the radical left and you have the radical right. You read some of the things and they are extreme. They are seriously extreme."

Chants of "fight, fight, fight" broke out as Trump reminisced about the assassination attempt, saying, "It was exactly one week ago,".

"I stand before you only by the grace of almighty God," he added. "I shouldn't be here right now. Something very special happened."

Trump sent his regards to the two individuals recovering from injuries sustained at the rally and honoured 50 year old firefighter Corey Comperatore, who tragically died, stating, "is a hero and we will carry his memory in our hearts."

Before Trump's appearance, his VP pick, Ohio Senator JD Vance, introduced himself to voters with stories of his challenging upbringing, raised by his grandmother amidst his mother's addiction struggles.

Vance expressed how surreal his political ascent felt, remarking, "I've got to be honest, it's still a little bit weird to see my name on the signs," while addressing the crowd. He didn't shy away from slamming Vice President Kamala Harris for her long political career.

He lambasted both parties for their hand in moving manufacturing jobs to China and Mexico, until Trump stepped in.

The Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids was nearly full an hour before Trump's scheduled arrival, with its 12,000 seats almost all occupied by eager supporters.

The supporters, many adorned in red Make America Great Again caps and t-shirts featuring Trump's iconic raised fist, were still energised from the assassination attempt the previous week.
