PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person died following a chain-reaction crash involving seven vehicles north of Grand Rapids Monday afternoon, police say.

The crash happened at the intersection of Northland Drive and Plainfield Avenue in Plainfield Township.

Michigan State Police said a vehicle sideswiped several others that were waiting in the left turn lane. The vehicle at the front of the line was rear-ended and shoved into a oncoming vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that sideswiped the others died at the scene.

Northland Drive was shut down between Plainfield and Grand River Drive while emergency responders were on the scene. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.
