SpartanNash apologizes after Grand Rapids fireworks come as surprise

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — SpartanNash has apologized after a fireworks display Tuesday night took some Grand Rapids residents by surprise.

Tuesday night, several community members took to social media to wonder about the loud noises they were hearing, expressing confusion and — in some cases — concern.

The fireworks were part of the annual Food Solutions Expo, which brings together more than 1,500 food and grocery suppliers and independent retail customers in downtown Grand Rapids. Specifically, they were meant to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Our Family brand, according to SpartanNash.

“We offer our apologies for any disturbance (Tuesday) night with the fireworks,” the company said in a statement provided to News 8. “… We recognize that we should have provided advance notice to nearby residents, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience or concern the fireworks caused.”

Now, SpartanNash says it’s offering a 10% online discount for its local stores “as a gesture of goodwill and in celebration of all things grocery.”

“Simply go to the website for your preferred store, shop online, and enter the promo code FIREWORKS at checkout,” the company said.

The discount is valid through Aug. 3 and excludes alcohol and tobacco.

“SpartanNash is proud and grateful to call Grand Rapids our home and show off the city to our guests this week!” the company’s statement concluded.
