GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — With about 100 days left until the November election, Michigan Democrats and Harris for President are launching their first “weekend of action.”

Democratic U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten spoke Saturday at a canvass launch in Grand Rapids.

“Across Michigan and throughout West Michigan, we have tons of canvassing operations happening,” Scholten, of Grand Rapids, told News 8. “This weekend really launches a significant effort that is going to continue for the next hundred days.”

Harris for President says the weekend of action will include 185 events statewide, from news conferences to visits from political figures like former Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords , the Arizona congresswoman who was wounded in a shooting in 2011.

Michigan is considered a swing state and is expected to see increasing attention from both parties ahead of the November election. Last week, former President Donald Trump held a rally in Grand Rapids , the first since the attempt on his life.

A survey released Thursday morning , conducted by Emerson College Polling, The Hill and WOOD TV8, showed 46% of Michigan voters said they would vote for Trump and 45% for Vice President Kamala Harris. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.4%, making it a statistical dead heat.

“We have a strong coordinated effort here in Michigan, where we are working to elect Democrats up and down the ballot,” Scholten told News 8. “We know that the presidential race is critical, but we also have some huge, high-stakes races here in West Michigan.”

Scholten was elected in 2022 to represent Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District — the first Democrat to represent the area since the ’70s, the Associated Press reports. She is up for reelection this year.

The congresswoman said it’s essential that people get out to vote.

“The enthusiasm is so palpable right now, online, in the room,” Scholten said. “But that has to translate into concrete action and making sure people actually cast their ballot.”
