POKEGAMA — The Grand Rapids high school fishing team is reeling after they pulled their second consecutive tournament win out of the water, this time on Pokegama.
The Thunderhawks fishing team were led by cousins Ryder and Joey Miskovich, the winning tandem out of 28 pairs in the B.A.S.S. Greater Northern Conference Tournament on Pokegama Lake on Tuesday, July 9.
The event was one in a series of three Great North Open fishing tournaments this summer, and following their home-win on Tuesday, the Thunderhawks have now won the first two.
Last month, the Tyler and Reid Johnson-tandem out-fished the competition on Side Lake, with a final weight of 15.88 pounds. On Tuesday it was the Miskovich’s turn for victory on Pokegama Lake, a place they are quite familiar with.
“They are good fishermen and know the lake very well,” said team coach Chris Stanley. “That along with putting in the time and effort to pre-fish to figure things out.”
Team Miskovich took first overall with five fish totaling 18.5 pounds.
“All of their fish were good fish,” says Stanley. “They had an upgrade at the end of the day to put them over the edge.”
Grand Rapids will carry a lot of momentum into the next event, but Stanley wants his team to take lessons from the past as they approach Vermillion in less than two weeks, the next host lake.
“We need to learn from our past experiences on the lake. We have historically not done great on Vermillion but now with a few years of experience under their belts, we have a higher expectation,” said Stanley.
The Thunderhawks are in position to sweep the Greater North Open series and take the Triple Crown if they can reel in another victory in Open #3 on Lake Vermillion Tuesday, July 23.
