Grand Rapids 10, Moose Lake 0

    Duluth 2, Grand Rapids 0

    Grand Rapids 9, Cloquet 6

In the first game of the Northeast Sub State Legion tournament, Grand Rapids took down Moose Lake 10-0 in six innings on Cloquet’s Mettner Field. Nolan Svatos got the start for the Wolfpack and controlled the game on the mound, yielding only two hits to Moose Lake while striking out two batters.

Riley Matteson was effective from the plate in the first game, getting two hits and driving in two while scoring a run. Caleb Gunderson was a menace on offense, bringing in two on a double and scoring two more himself in the game. Joe Dick had an RBI double and Sam Dick brought in two runs as well. Alex Wegwerth also drove in two runs on a single.

The Wolfpack used up their offense for the day against Moose Lake, because the bats were quiet in game two against Duluth, who took down Rapids 2-0.

Sam Dick and Caleb Gunderson shared duties on the mound in the second game. Dick got the start, going four innings and allowing one earned on four hits. Gunderson threw two innings of relief, allowing two hits. Erro Lamppa had two hits in the loss for the Wolfpack, who faced Cloquet the next day.

Kaden Sweeney got the start in the third game, but Cloquet chased him early after four hits and two walks in one inning. Erro Lamppa pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief of Sweeney, allowing a run on a hit and three walks.

Cloquet found themselves up 5-0 after the second but Grand Rapids came flying back with a big third inning, scoring six runs on two hits and a handful of walks. Jaden Lehmberg finished the game on the mound and stabilized the defense for the Wolfpack, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing only a single run the rest of the way on four hits and a walk while ringing up two batters.

Grand Rapids totaled five hits in the game but produced a lot of their offense from the 11 free-passes given by Cloquet’s pitchers, including three walks for Joe Dick. Riley Matteson, Sam Dick, and Nolan Svatos all had two of their own. Dick, Matteson, and Wegwerth each scored two runs to lead the comeback win.

Grand Rapids played Proctor/Hermantown on Friday. Results of the game were unavailable at publication.
