4 shot in separate incidents over holiday
Four people were shot in Toledo over the holiday, according to Toledo police. Around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, a 34-year-old man showed up at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center with a gunshot wound. He said he was shot near Greenbelt Parkway and Bush Street but gave police an inconsistent story as to what happened. A Toledo teen was shot in the neck Thursday afternoon, police said. Around 1 p.m. police, responding to a ShotSpotter alert reporting 14 gunshots, found evidence of a shooting in the 400 block of West Delaware Avenue. While on scene, Xavier Russell, 17, walked into St. Vincent seeking treatment for a gunshot wound. Police said the gunshot wound was the result of a disorder the Russel youth was involved in on West Delaware. Around 11 p.m. Thursday, police responded to Birmingham Terrace in East Toledo on a report of two people shot. They found two victims, each with gunshot wounds that didn’t appear to be life-threatening. Due to lack of cooperation from the victims and no ShotSpotter alerts from the devices near the complex, police are unsure of where the pair were shot. Both individuals were transported to St. Vincent.

Toledo native first in world to receive innovative new heart valve
For much of her life, Sandie Zaruca knew she had a leaky valve in her heart, but she never imagined that someday she would be helping pioneer her own treatment. In May, the 74-year-old Sylvania resident and former office supply store owner was the first in the world to receive a new type of heart valve, implanted by Dr. Michael Moront, a cardiothoracic surgeon at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. The bioprosthetic valve, called the Avalus Ultra, takes cow tissue and pairs it with medical-grade fabric and a special type of thermoplastic to replicate the function of a human heart valve. Dr. Moront, who was part of the team that helped develop the Avalus Ultra, said he felt comfortable performing the procedure.
New Music Under the Stars season truly rings in summer
The number of Toledo’s outdoor musical venues have increased: the Metroparks, gazebos in city parks, outside of libraries, you name it. But before all these concert venues were even imagined, the biggest venue — outdoor, that is — was the Toledo Zoo Amphitheatre. And for decades, it’s been the setting for listening to music and seeing plays — under the stars — surrounded by the creatures that make music of their own. The series that began with the venue’s inauguration in July, 1936, begins on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. with the 122nd Army Band taking listeners back to the 1980s. The concerts last through Aug. 11. The great amphitheater, along with other structures that make up the city, was built thanks to the largesse of the Works Progress Administration.

More legal wrangling over Lake Erie
Over the last 10 years, it seems almost as certain as the likelihood of a green hue in parts of Lake Erie in late summer. If Jamie Farr loves Tony Packo’s, there is a pretty solid chance the good folks of Toledo are trying to sue someone regarding water quality in Lake Erie and are directing their emerald-water ire at Ohio agriculture.
