Grand Traverse County man charged with making terrorist threats
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Grand Traverse County man is facing five charges after deputies say he was making death threats and calling in bomb threats. The investigation began June 26 when 33-year-old Jeffrey Topous Jr. allegedly threatened to kill an employee at a local business as well as law enforcement.

No body, partial body contact advisories issued for Traverse City beaches

East Bay Corners Farmers Market now accepting SNAP benefits
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — Access to local and fresh produce isn’t always possible, so the farmers market in East Bay Charter Township wants to close the gap between local vendors and people with lower incomes. People will now be able to use their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to buy fruits and vegetables at the market. Sam Lasusa, community development fellow, said it’s a twofold benefit: people who might be lower income and don’t usually shop at a farmers market get the chance, and farmers get new customers. “Locally-grown produce is higher nutrient content than what you might get at like a local grocery store,” he added.
Michigan’s overall crash numbers fell in 2023, but pedestrian- and bicycle-related crashes rose
The number of overall traffic crashes and fatalities on Michigan roadways fell slightly in 2023, according to recently released data from the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center. The 1,095 fatalities recorded in 2023 were slightly lower than the 1,123 deaths in 2022, a 2% decrease. The number of total crashes in 2023 (287,953) decreased by 2% compared to the previous year (293,341).

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — Grand Traverse County Register of Deeds Peggy Haines announced a program for reporting and preventing property fraud. “Due to increased community interest in potential property fraud, I would like everyone to be aware of the Property Fraud Alert Program that is available through our software company,” Haines said in a press release. “With various property fraud incidents occurring recently in Michigan, I encourage everyone to sign up for our free program.” The program will alert property owners of any possible fraud by notifying subscribers when any document is recorded in their name with the Grand Traverse County Register of Deeds Office. GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — The most dangerous intersection in Grand Traverse County is at US-31 at West South Airport Road in Garfield Township, according to a new study by Michigan Auto Law. That intersection saw 43 total crashes and four injuries in 2023, the most recent year for which data is available, the group reported. While that number is high, it doesn’t crack the top 20 worst intersections in Michigan, however. Most of those dangerous intersections are in southeast Michigan, and all are in the southern part of the state. Grand Traverse County was the only Northern Michigan county to even make the Michigan Auto Law report, which used Michigan State Police data for the reports.
