California heat: What to expect this weekend; when will the heat wave end
A searing heat wave will continue through much of next week and could bring more days of triple-digit temperatures and dangerous fire conditions, authorities said Saturday. Earlier this year, two trends gaining momentum neared a collision in California’s restaurants and bars. One was a statewide ban on junk fees — here defined as anything over and above the items purchased on a particular visit to a shop, hotel or other establishment. The other? The fact that a growing number of restaurants are charging fees in order to pay their staff a living wage or provide them with healthcare. The metaphorical collision in this situation is that California’s government seemed ready to treat restaurant fees as junk fees — which is to say, not allowing bars and restaurants to charge them.
$10 billion green bond measure to appear on November ballots

Sheriff's office IDs drug store security guard shot dead in Fremont last month
FREMONT -- A CVS security guard who was shot and killed last month at a store in Fremont was identified by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office as Abakr Mohamed Amin, a 41-year-old Sacramento resident.The shooting at the store in the Fremont Hub Shopping Center occurred at about 11 p.m. on June 13, when Amin was shot after an argument with someone who came into the store.Amin died at the scene after life-saving measures were unsuccessful.The other person was hospitalized with multiple stab wounds.The homicide remains under investigation.
