Hazelwood summer camp teaches life lessons along with rowing on the Mon River
Hazelwood rises above the Monongahela River’s banks. Most of its residents, including its youngsters, have little contact with it, including water sports. The Center of Life summer camp program has challenged that with a rowing program for its 11- to 14-year-old participants through a partnership with Central Catholic High School’s crew team, led by alumnus and Syracuse graduate Anicet Mundundu.

Valley Park Woman Drowns In Big River
A Valley Park woman drowned Sunday afternoon in St. Francois County. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40-year-old Melissa A. Hill of Valley Park, Mo., entered the water around 2:15 p.m. to help another individual in the water, upstream from St. Francois State Park on the Big River. Hill became unconscious and was found floating face down by bystanders, who recovered Hill and began life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful.

One Way Singers to make final performance Sunday
The One Way Singers will make its final performance on Sunday at the morning worship service at the 1st Baptist Church on West Main Street in Salem. The group based at First Baptist was led by former Salem Community High School Band Director Doyle Combs and involved between 85 orchestra members and singers across the country as well as Canada and Mexico between 1971 to 1980.
Galesburg girl wins Li’l Miss Illinois pageant
There she is, Li’l Miss Illinois. That person is Kynleigh Fox of Galesburg, who was recently named Li’l Miss Illinois 2024 through the Miss Illinois Youth Program. Fox, daughter of Stacy Dunham, took part in the pageant recently as Li’l Miss Knox County. Fox recently turned 9 years old and will be a fourth grader at Galesburg Christian School. Among the activities she was required to take part included a talent – she danced – and an interview. Fox aced it as she was named Overall Top Interview.
