The Granite Falls man accused of threatening, sexually assaulting and waterboarding his girlfriend inside her dorm room in St. Paul last year has struck a plea deal with prosecutors.

Keanu A. Labatte, 20, was initially charged in September with three counts of 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct, domestic assault by strangulation and threats of violence in connection with the assault, which took place that same month at St. Catherine's University.

The charges against Labatte said he held the victim against her will for three days, terrorizing and attacking her until finally allowing her to go to the cafeteria for food — at which point she notified authorities, leading to his arrest.

As for the suspected motive, court documents said Labatte had become "infuriated" after discovering text messages, pictures and social media content on the victim's phone.

On Friday, he entered a guilty plea on a single amended charge of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in a Ramsey County court, admitting to choking and sexually assaulting the woman. The other charges have been dismissed, and Labatte is now facing a maximum prison sentence of seven and a half years.

With the plea deal, Labatte avoids a jury trial that was due to begin in a matter of days.

According to the Pioneer Press , Labatte's laywer said his client denies the other "salacious" accusations of the case, including waterboarding the victim, holding her hostage and kidnapping her.

The paper says prosecutors plan to ask for the full seven and a half years at Labatte's sentencing, which is scheduled for November.
