MOFFAT COUNTY, CO - As you drive into northwest Colorado's Moffat County, your eyes will be pleased by over two million acres of unspoiled public lands and free-flowing rivers.

Cedar Mountain, just north of Craig, rises 1,000 feet above the Yampa Valley and contains 880 acres of public space with mountain biking, horse riding, and cross-country skiing. The 3.5-mile Stearns Trail, which is suitable for all hiking levels and offers views of mule deer, marmots, foxes, coyotes, and other wildlife, is framed by the horseshoe-shaped, juniper-rimmed peak.

At Cross Mountain Canyon, beautiful canyon walls of varied colors surround the Yampa River, making it ideal for a day trip or camping trip. Views of Bakers Peak and Mount Zirkel may be found just west of Maybell. The Routt National Forest is also home to Black Mountain.

This mountain offers jaw-dropping panoramas and views of the Rocky Mountains, with dirt roads leading to Lost, Slater, and California Park. There are also numerous picnic and camping areas, as well as fishing holes and wildlife observing opportunities in the area. On your raft, take on the legendary cataracts of Mammoth Falls, the Snake Pit, and Pour Over City before drying off on a canyon hike.

At Elkhead Reservoir, where bass, crappie, pike, and rainbow trout swim beneath the surface of the 900-acre man-made lake, you can "fight" with your food. If fishing isn't your thing, the reservoir is also water- and jet-skiing paradise, located just 9 miles outside of Craig. Are you a sailor who prefers to stay on land? Hikers, cross-country skiers, and snowshoers can find eleven miles of routes to explore.
