The new State Historian plans to give a more inclusive historical account of Colorado

    2021-08-17

DENVER, CO – Although the existence of a Colorado State Historian has been around for a decade, Denver’s resident Dr. Nicki Gonzales is the first state historian who is coming from the Latino community. With her position, she plans to give a more inclusive and diverse history of Colorado.

As a woman of color with strong roots in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado, she said that her history was “not always portrayed in the public”.

This is one of the foundations why she thinks it’s very important to share the broader and more inclusive history of Colorado. Representation matters for a lot of people, especially for the under-represented communities.

She added that becoming the first State Historian from Latino Community makes her feel responsible to bring better representation and be a role model for the young generation.

One of her major plans to achieve her goal is to invite a lot of young people to look into Colorado’s past in order to create more awareness about the important values of history and significant historical events.

As more and more people recognize America’s history of racism and its cruel violent acts towards marginalized groups, she explained that the job of State Historian is very important in this moment of time.

Professor Gonzales is currently teaching history and planning the academic imitative at Regis University. The focus of her research includes the Chicano Movement in Colorado, the American Southwest, Chicano activism in various aspects, and the history of land grant communities.

She has contributed to the two major History Colorado’s exhibitions, which are the 'Zoom In: The Centennial State in 100 Objects', and 'El Movimiento: The Chicano Movement in Colorado'.
