Proactive steps you can take to protect your property from wildfire

    2021-08-15

Douglas, CO – There have been 337 total fires in Colorado that burned a total of at least 27,912 acres of land.

Firefighters always do their best to reduce fire damage, but ultimately as the property owner, it is your responsibility to protect your property.

Taking proactive actions can make the difference between losing and keeping your property. There are several steps you can take to protect your property, livestock, pets, or your business.

First, make sure there are no pine needles, leaves, and debris in the gutters, decks, and roof valleys. Always mow grasses regularly and keep them short and well-watered. Without dry surface to catch on, wildfires are unlikely to happen.

You also need to space out trees and shrubs for it will make flames harder to spread, also prune branches to prevent flames from jumping from branches to house. This way, it will be easier for the firefighters to do their job as well.

According to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group, wind gusts may also have impacts on fire conditions. Seal off any opening, such as pet doors and attics, to prevent embers to get through.

Check if you have flammable material for your roof, fencing, lawn furniture, or gates. Replace the fence, gates, and lawn furniture that are made with combustible material.

You can also improve your security by replacing your roof with fire-resistance ceramic tiles, slate or composite shingles, or metal sheets.

Wildfire can happen even after you take these proactive steps. To request a free wildfire hazard assessment on your property, contact the County's Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist at 303-660-7497 or jwelle@douglas.co.us.
