MORGAN COUNTY, Co - The American Public Gas Association or APGA has recognized the City of Fort Morgan Natural Gas Department for ten years of solid worker safety.

The reward is determined by the number of recordable injuries divided by the number of man-hours worked. Natural gas distribution is a dangerous business, and Fort Morgan Gas Department staff strive to make it as safe as possible.

The purpose of this award is to raise public awareness of natural gas companies' tireless efforts to keep personnel and the community safe. Because of the continued emphasis on employee safety among APGA member systems, public gas systems have one of the greatest employee safety records of any industry.

Tony Behrends, Fort Morgan Gas Superintendent said that the entire department must commit to and work hard to implement safe utility practices. the safety record is something they're quite proud of. It's the result of highly trained and skilled professionals that are dedicated to providing the best possible service to the public. The gas department will try to keep the community's natural gas service safe and reliable.

In 1955, Fort Morgan began laying natural gas pipes. Currently, the city Gas Department is responsible for 102 kilometers of gas main lines, 4,271 services, and 4,715 gas meters. Steel and polyethylene pipe with diameters ranging from half-inch to eight inches make up the natural gas system. The city Gas Department is proud of the system and the work it does to keep the neighborhood safe.

APGA is a nationwide association that represents more than 700 publicly owned natural gas distribution systems. It was founded in 1961.
