Summit County, Co - The Food and Drug Administration revised Emergency Administration Authorizations for both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines on August 12, 2021, to allow for the use of a third dosage as a booster in select immunocompromised patients after the first two doses.

Summit County Public Health Director Amy Wineland said that their goal is to continue to prioritize the immunocompromised community members while following state advice to deliver an additional dosage of mRNA vaccinations to ensure they have adequate protection against COVID-19.

She added that as long as they've had at least four weeks since their second dosage, the Public Health will give them the booster shot at one of our regularly scheduled vaccination clinics. Giving an extra dosage of the vaccination to those who are most at risk of catastrophic outcomes will help them boost their immunity and prevent more serious disease, hospitalization, and death.

The vaccination product for the third dose should be the same as for the first two doses. If the vaccination is not available, an alternative mRNA dosage can be utilized. Additional doses are provided at no cost. An additional dose does not require identification, insurance, or proof of medical history.

Coloradans with immunocompromising conditions can self-report to vaccine providers.

Moderately to severely immunocompromised people should also take the following actions to protect themselves and others from COVID-19, in addition to obtaining an additional mRNA dose:

    • Wear a mask
    • Social distancing
    • avoids crowds and indoor spaces that have poor air circulation.

Immunocompromised people who have close contacts should also be vaccinated against COVID-19. Although just two doses are allowed, this will ensure that close contacts do not endanger the health of their at-risk friends and family.
