VAIL, CO - The Vail Police Department has partnered with a local logistics firm to help support a pilot program in Vail Village that will improve loading and delivery operations.

The E-Vail Courier pilot project, coordinated by 106 West in Eagle County, will run for six months during the winter season to improve the feasibility of removing big vehicles from Vail Village and replace them with smaller electric delivery vehicles.

According to Vail Village Police Cmdr. Ryan Kenney, the loading and delivery of merchandise has been a complicated and difficult procedure, with the increased presence and frequency of large delivery vehicles in pedestrian areas degrading the guest experience.

To test a new delivery system, 106 West will use its current infrastructure of contracted delivery services and established partnerships to reroute participating delivery trucks to one of the five designated loading docks in Vail Village. The supplies will then be transferred to small electric cars, which will finish the delivery to businesses.

There are five underground cargo docks, at the base of Gondola One, Solaris, Sebastian, Four Seasons, and One Willow. Despite the fact that the docks are currently open to all commercial vehicles, they have historically been underutilized due to the challenges of labor, handcarts, and other manual deliveries.

To help direct the winter E-Vail Courier pilot program, the Police Department has formed a 12-member working group involving representatives from the business community, delivery businesses, town officials, and other key stakeholders. The working group's first task is to communicate with the pilot's affected businesses and delivery companies.

Businesses will not be charged to participate in this program.

The $380,000 pilot program, which was approved by the Vail Town Council, will include the utilization of two or more electric vehicles as well as manpower from 6 West to establish the extent and feasibility of a new delivery system for the village. For future consideration, this will incorporate a volume and pricing analysis.

Because of the long-term success of a centralized underground loading dock at Arrabelle at Vail Square, deliveries to Lionshead Village were omitted from the pilot program.
