GRANTSVILLE, Md. (WBOY) — A West Virginia man was pronounced dead Tuesday following a wreck in Garrett County, Md.

According to a release from the Maryland State Police, at about 4:51 p.m., troopers with the state police’s McHenry Barrack responded to a vehicle collision on New Germany Road in Grantsville. When troopers arrived, they found that a Toyota Tacoma had driven off the road into a wooded area, as well as a Freightliner utility truck parked by the side of the road.

The driver of the Tacoma was determined to be James Thomas Shillingburg III, of Ridgely, W.Va., who was entrapped and subsequently pronounced dead by paramedics on the scene. The driver of the Freightliner, identified as Charles Meyers, of Sharpsburg, Md., was not injured.

Following a preliminary investigation, troopers said that the Tacoma was traveling southbound, while the Freightliner was traveling northbound. At some point, the Tacoma failed to follow the road as it curved right, which led to it crossing the yellow lines and striking the Freightliner. The Tacoma then continued fully across the northbound lane before driving off the road and down an embankment into a wooded area.

The full investigation by the Maryland State Police is still ongoing. Troopers were assisted on scene by the Maryland Natural Resources Police, the Grantsville Fire Department and the Northern Garrett Rescue Squad.
