Mountain Flower Lampshades coming to Virginia Highlands Festival
ABINGDON, Va. — A local artisan will return to the Virginia Highlands Festival this week, shedding a whole new light on functional pieces of art. Mike Floyd, along with his wife Colette, creates pressed flower lampshades from the wild flora that grows naturally at their countryside home, situated along the winding Fox Creek in Grayson County, Virginia.

WCC hosts girls construction camp
WILKESBORO — Wilkes Community College recently hosted a week-long Construction Girls Camp tailored for girls in grades 9-12. Convention draws largest crowd in years
ELK CREEK ― Counting both adult and youth contestants, approximately 200 acoustic instrument pickers, folk song singers, and flatfoot dancers from as far away as Georgia and Maryland descended on the tiny community of Elk Creek (pop. 478) on June 28-29 to participate in the 55th Grayson County Old-Time and Bluegrass Fiddlers’ Convention, which is sponsored by the Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
Creating a winning entry for the Grayson County Fair
ELK CREEK — The Grayson County Fair returns Aug. 9-10 and it’s never too early to start thinking about entering. Fair competition categories include fruits and vegetables, baked and preserved goods, photography, art, flowers, plants, crafts and quilts. Museum announces July happenings
BAYWOOD — Matthews Living History Farm Museum has announced its schedule of events for July. The museum is a 21-acre working farm, circa 1900, offering activities demonstrating common practices in Grayson County around that time, along with weekly live music and children’s programs.

Nicholas Hancock spent the weekend in Elk Creek, VA to cover the 55th Grayson County Old-time and Bluegrass Fiddlers’ Convention, sponsored by the Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Brian Billings, of the Elk Creek VFD, said there were definitely more participants and spectators than last year when rains kept the school grounds soggy.
