Self described as a “Closeted Disney Princess” Siena Christie saw her lose one of her glass slippers as the pandemic hit and quickly the dreams of touring with a new CD evaporated. Teaching music and writing in Vancouver WA (sister city to Portland OR) was solace and if you believe her “Desert Island Companion” song she coped and survived with her significant other without killing each other. Wasn’t that somewhat of many of our tales in 2020? 2021 came along and she was gently pushed by some friends to submit a song to the Great River Folk Fest Songwriting contest , and maybe the return of the second glass slipper.

She had been winners of past songwriting contests, but had been tarnished from many other contests from the costs, to the lack of respect for the winning selection, or how the process had evolved. She would coin the expression, “She grew tired of submitting the songs to the men in the suits.”

Along came the GRFF contest, and she was enthralled with the fellowship from the other submitters, the consistency of great material, and genuine support and love the artists were getting from the organizers of the contest. She submitted two songs and only in the last two weeks of the contest. Both were simply filmed, and were from her pandemic released EP “Ice Olation”

“Dear Northland” was a beautiful tale of escaping north to remedy loneliness only to find three settings even more lonely. “Moss in your Name” was again a pandemic ritual of Siena’s to visit a nearby cemetery and the names and the spirits helped write it. "Soft green moss in your name" is so gentle, and that princess vocal could easily be in films.

After she was named finalist, she had a chance to sit down with Dave Schipper the fest chair to take the infamous Great River Folksinger Factoid survey. Her warmth, wit and humor was on display, and was a pleasant surprise to Dave since it is so hard to read people just from their Social Media when they kind of disdain posting to social media.

Siena is one of those rising stars that you should follow, buy her music, and enjoy. If she wins or loses the fest contest, she has won a big fan with Dave Schipper who said he would be honored to book her for one of his Bluff View House Concert series in Holmen WI.
