Greeley declares disaster after storms cause over $1.45M in damage

DENVER (KDVR) — The city of Greeley has issued a local disaster declaration after severe storms tore through and caused damage earlier this week.

The storm that moved through Greeley on Tuesday night caused over $1.45 million in damages, according to a release from the city.

The storm dropped piles of hail and inches of rain over Greeley — hail covered the ground like snow and rainwater trapped vehicles in floods. FOX31 crews visited Greeley on Wednesday and observed severe damage to homes and vehicles in the area.

A man died during the storm , but police said Friday that his cause of death was still under investigation.

On Friday, the city announced that Mayor John Gates signed a local disaster declaration in response to the significant flooding.

“This declaration has been filed and will go before City Council on June 4 to continue the disaster declaration by resolution,” the city stated.

The city said the severe weather caused “extensive flooding and large amounts of hail, leading to damage across downtown and east Greeley.”

Since the storm, the city said its employees have been working to clean and clear city streets, assess damage and provide support for those impacted.

“The Local Disaster Declaration is a crucial step in our response. It allows the City of Greeley to work interjurisdictionally in our recovery efforts and may activate eligibility for state and federal assistance programs,” the city said.

As of Wednesday, Greeley estimated total damages from the storm amount to over $1.45 million, but the city is still in the early stages of reporting. The city is asking residents and businesses to report damages to the city of Greeley and Weld County so officials can see the extent of the storm’s impacts.
