A recent report from USA Today sought to determine which states and cities around the country were 'thriving' when it came to small businesses in recent years , and an often-overlooked Colorado city performed notably well in their ranking.

While Colorado ranked in the middle-of-the road among the states with a 9.3 percent growth across all sectors of small business between 2016 to 2021, the city of Greeley outperformed the rest of the state in a big way.

The Greeley area ranked fourth nationwide among metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas with at least 200,000 residents. This high ranking was thanks to a 19 percent growth of small business across all sectors between 2016 and 2021. The top city for small business growth nationwide across all sectors was Boise City at 26.5 percent growth.

Greeley also performed well in a few specific sectors of small business, ranking seventh nationwide in terms of small entertainment businesses with a growth of 33.3 percent in this sector, ranking sixth nationwide in terms of small tradesmen businesses with a growth of 30.9 percent in this sector, and ranking seventh nationwide in terms of small personal care businesses with a growth of 49.3 percent in this sector.

Located in northern Colorado's Weld County, Greeley is the 10th most populated city in Colorado with 108,795 residents plus another 220,186 residents in the full metropolitan area.

The city has experienced rapid growth in recent years, in part thanks to being more affordable than other major Colorado cities. According to Best Places , Greeley scores a 113.4 on the national 'cost of living' index, which is 13.4 percent higher than the national average but 5.9 percent lower than the Colorado average.

While Greeley has entertainment and outdoor recreation of its own, it's also about 45 minutes from Fort Collins and a little over an hour from Denver.
