Green Bay Packers Could Target Veteran Cornerback

The Green Bay Packers roster looks pretty solid heading into their offseason workouts. They have done a great job of addressing weaknesses throughout the 2024 NFL offseason, hitting them hard in free agency and the draft.

But, even the best teams will have areas that they can improve on, and the Green Bay Packers are no different. One of the areas they could look to shore up in the coming weeks is in their secondary.

Green Bay overhauled the safety position, but not much has been done at cornerback. A bounce-back from Jaire Alexander would be ideal, and some of the safety additions will help in pass coverage as well.

But, opposite of Alexander, a need remains. The other starting boundary cornerback job is up for grabs, with 2021 first-round pick Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine taking part in the competition. Seventh-round rookie Kalen King could also play himself into a role.

Given some of the uncertainty at the position, it should come as no surprise that cornerback was listed as one of the team’s biggest weaknesses remaining. To fill that void, Kris Knox of Bleacher Report has suggested the Green Bay Packers look to add veteran Xavien Howard to the mix.

“Though they traded cornerback Rasul Douglas during the 2023 season, the Packers didn’t really address the corner position until drafting Penn State’s Kalen King in the seventh round. Adding a veteran to the cornerback room would be advisable, and Xavien Howard certainly fits the bill.

Howard battled a foot injury with the Miami Dolphins last season but still allowed an opposing passer rating of just 81.3 in coverage. Though he’ll turn 31 in July, he’s still capable of boosting a secondary,” wrote Knox.

At the very least, Howard would provide the Packers with some insurance in case injuries hit the position again. He would be a high-level insurance policy for the team in the secondary, as he still has some gas left in the tank.

Having a veteran of that caliber can also benefit the younger players on the roster. Green Bay is green at cornerback beyond Alexander, and someone such as Howard could help develop the guys at the position to one day become every down players and starters.
