With one of their seventh-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected quarterback Michael Pratt. Many analysts and evaluators were shocked that the Tulane product was on the board that late into the draft.
By most accounts, Michael Pratt received a pre-draft grade that put him as a fourth or fifth-round pick. That presented the Green Bay Packers with some incredible value by landing him near the end of the 2024 NFL Draft.
General manager Brian Gutekunst has said he wants to make it a habit again of selecting at least one quarterback per season. That is a good strategy because having a good backup is integral to the team finding success if a starter has to be removed from the lineup for any reason.
Also, developing a backup quarterback could result in the team recouping some assets down the road. Teams are always on the hunt for a quarterback, so flipping one for some future draft capital should your depth chart be set is good business.
What can we expect to see from Michael Pratt in his rookie season? In the opinion of Rob Demovsky of ESPN, he will be on the roster; whether it is as the No. 2 behind Jordan Love or the practice squad is going to be found out in competition.
“The Packers weren’t unhappy with Clifford, but the theme of their offseason was adding competition — so why not extend it to the QB2 position? Of Pratt, quarterbacks coach Tom Clements said, “He’s smart, he picks things up quick, he’s diligent … he’s athletic enough and he can throw.” The third quarterback will probably end up on the practice squad, so even if Pratt doesn’t beat out Clifford, he’ll likely be around,” wrote Demovsky.
Given the expectations surrounding the Packers this season, it would not be a surprise to see another quarterback added to the mix. A veteran with starting experience would make sense.
If the Green Bay Packers had to turn to Sean Clifford or Michael Pratt to start games, how confident would they be in coming away victorious? Offseason workouts can quell some of those concerns, but it will be something to keep an eye on moving forward.
