The Green Bay Packers made a major change with their defense during the 2024 offseason. Jeff Hafley will be taking over as coordinator from Joe Barry, switching to a 4-3 base from a 3-4. Defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt is one of the players excited about the change.

Heading into Year 3 of his NFL career, the first-round pick in 2022 out of Georgia is expecting big things. He is in the camp that the scheme change will result in being able to get after the opponents instead of spending so much time dissecting what is going on.

“Wyatt believes that Hafley’s defensive approach will allow him to “focus on one thing and not a lot of things” and that focus is going to be “attack, attack, attack instead of reading and reacting” as it was under former coordinator Joe Barry,” wrote Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

In 2023, Devonte Wyatt saw his role grow after a relatively quiet rookie season. His snap count more than doubled, playing 224 snaps, only 23 percent in 2022 and 552 snaps in 2023, which was 50 percent.

With the increase in playing time, his production took off. As a rookie, he had only 15 combined tackles, zero tackles for loss and three quarterback hits with 1.5 sacks.

His sophomore season, he saw a jump. He recorded 36 total tackles with 5.5 sacks, six tackles for loss and 11 quarterback hits. In 2024, he is expecting even bigger production.

“It’s time for a monster leap. Yes sir. A monster leap,” Wyatt said, via Jason Wilde of Madison.com.

You would be hard-pressed to find anyone willing to bet against Devonte Wyatt having a monster leap. He has shown potential to be a true game-breaker in the trenches and has the potential to thrive in the new defensive scheme.

The Georgia product is one of several players who should benefit from the coaching change. The schematic change will benefit a player of Wyatt’s caliber greatly, as Alper noted his role has been dialed in and he can get after opponents in the backfield.
